On Page or Off Page Optimization?

I have been getting some lessons in Search Engine Optimization and the latest one I need to share. The thought process and implementation of SEO work goes into two categories; On Page Optimization and Off Page Optimization. One is something you should do and the other is the one you HAVE to do if you want to rank higher in Google.

Lets first talk about On Page optimization. The on page optimization includes things like title, headings, keyword density, keyword placement, bold, italic, underline, alt. image tags, meta tags, etc... These are all things you should do to help your site rank higher.

Off Page optimization is the thing you HAVE to do to get your site to the first page of Google. Stating with the anchor text used in the link that links back to your website. This is a good one. Anytime you can get a link is good, but a link with your targeted keyword in the text that links back is better. Next, the page rank of the website your link is on is a big factor. This is why you want quality over quantity. One good PR of 5 or more is worth a lot more than 100 PR's of 1, the number of 100 is probably more like a 1,000 but I will be conservative. Then we have the title of the page your link is on and the age of that website and the list goes on and on. If I gave them all out I wouldn't be in business.

As you can see there are a lot of factors in getting your web site to the first page of Google. So when you see the SEO guy next time ask what his Off Page optimization practices are.

That's it for today, stay tuned for other secrets of Search Engine Optimization.
